Wet Climbing Rope

Wet rope is known to seriously degrade the rope strength. In fact, the rope strength can be reduced to about a third of the original rope strength.

To combat this problem, all the rope manufacturers have various ways to try and keep the rope dry. Some manufacturers use chemicals to keep the outer braid dry and other manufacturers keep the outer braid dry and the inner rope core dry.

A specially treated rope will cost more. Most climbers only climb in the summer and aren't so concerned about the rope getting wet. If you want the best protection, go for a dry core and a cry outer braid.

One good thing about wet rope is that the rope gains its strength back after it is fully dry. In fact, the rope will only about 3-4% of its strength by a thorough soaking and then drying out completely. If your rope is very wet, keep in mind it takes a few days to dry out completely. It isn't a quick process to dry the rope out all the way.
